Thank you to h_mazzuto at Art, Paper, Scissors, Glue for the basic idea for this lesson.

Our 5th grade artists reviewed the primary, secondary, and complementary colors and why they are positioned where they are on the color wheel. We then talked about the intermediate or tertiary colors and how we can mix specific primary and secondary colors to create them. For example yellow

and green mix to make yellow-green.

1. Students traced a circle template on their 12"x12"white drawing paper.

They also marked their circle with the 12 markers on the template. These

marks were on each template to use as a guide on where to draw the lines

to create the 12 triangles for their color wheel.

This project was actually done last March. As I was looking through my project photos I realized it was never posted. I think the results for last years Hex Signs are particularly successful. The student artists were directed to create a traditional or modern design for a Hex Sign.

In fourth grade our students study Pennsylvania. As an introduction to this lesson we talked about the Pennsylvania Dutch and how they made many types of folk art to decorate their surroundings. One form of folk art they made was hex signs. Hex signs are usually designed in a round or radial shape.

The fourth grade student artists were given handouts on PA Dutch Hex sign designs. We talked about how some of them are symmetrical, some have borders, and others have images of things they were familiar with. We also talked about how the PA Dutch painted their hex signs with bright colors. Certain colors were also considered symbolic.
Our fourth grade artists started out the year by being given their art seats, having a brief discussion on Art Room Rules and practicing "Give me Five". Each student also made a special name tent to set out during art class. While the students were making their name tents I took a picture of each student for the seating chart. Next class we will start our first art lesson.
If time during the first 40 minute class, the student artists explore what they have learned with paper, pencils, and markers.

The second class of the lesson we all began by putting a dot in the middle of our paper. Next we drew an even number of straight or curvy lines to the outside edge of the paper. The third step was to draw shapes around the dot. They could be organic or geometric. Next we colored the shapes we created in with marker making sure we colored in a checker board effect.

Our fifth grade artists have become excellent at stitching. They learned the blanket stitch to construct these finely crafted pouches. Each student chose a color of felt and a contrasting color of warp string to show off their beautiful stitching.

The first class we talked about fabric arts and I demonstrated the blanket stitch. Many of the students got about half of their pouch stitched. The following class they finished their pouches added a bead for a button and made a stone out of indian red clay.

Some of the students chose to keep their clay stone smooth so they could draw on it or paint it after it was fired in the kiln. Others chose to carve their totem in the moist clay. Others chose to make their clay the shape of the totem they chose.

I am always very pleased with the quality of their stitching. Many of the boys are some of our best stitchers. This is the first experience most of our students have stitching. I feel that this a very special first that I have the opportunity to share with them.
Each stone and pouch has a special quality of it's own. The students really enjoy this project.
Fourth Grade Artists used the lines and shapes in the letters of their names to create a SYMMETRICAL NAME DESIGN. They began by folding their paper to establish a LINE OF SYMMETRY. Next they wrote their names on the fold with a primary pencil. They tried to stretch out their letters to fill the SPACE. They then folded their paper with their name on the inside and used a smooth hard object (we used the bottom of a sharpie) to rub where their name was written to TRANSFER the lines and shapes to the other side of paper. A MIRROR IMAGE was created.
The second country we explored was Africa. One of the art forms in Africa is the creative dying of material. Our artists got a tie dye effect on socks by using sharpies and rubbing alcohol. Mrs. Beck and I dripped rubbing alcohol on the designs to cause the colors to bleed out to resemble tie dye. This method was used since our time was limited.
Mrs. Beck, our music teacher and I are teaching the students in our after school intramural a song and visual art from six different countries. Our first country was China. We all had a great time as we practiced painting the Chinese symbols for the letters of our names in calligraphy.

To make this type of op art the students started by drawing small shapes as obstacles on their paper. Next they repeated each shape until they started running into each other. When that happened they decided how to complete their art. I did give some suggestions for the students that were a little unsure of what to do. Filling in some of the shapes that are left creates a nice contrast.

Each step taken in the process of making them is so interesting.

1. We begin by viewing the entertaining video, Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists, Vincent Van Gogh. After the video we play a review game until the end of the class period. Our 4th grade artists have great recall of what they viewed!
2. The next class period we draw a still life with a pencil on dark colored paper. Vincent Van Gogh's, "Sunflowers", as well as other art prints and a collection of silk flowers are used for inspiration.
3. When the drawing is complete we outline what we have drawn with Elmer's glue to create a texture. The still life projects laid out flat to dry for the next art class.
